SELT A1 Speaking & Listening
A 2-skill (speaking & listening) exam in English, aligned to the A1 level of the CEFR*. It is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) for UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI).
About the exam:

- Each candidate is examined individually
- Topics and tasks are based on practical experience
CEFR level A1 is the minimum requirement for the following visa types:
- Spouse/Fiancé Visa
- Parent applying on a merit of a child
- Further Leave to Remain
- Representative of an Overseas Business
- Tier 2 (Sportsperson)
Applicants with a higher language level can take an A2 or B1 Speaking & Listening exam, which also satisfies the application requirement.
After the exam, candidates receive a Test Report displaying their score and unique reference number (URN). The URN must be included in the visa application.

*Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), developed by the Council of Europe, is widely used to describe levels of language proficiency.

Exam Information
An A1 ESOL speaking and listening test assesses a test taker’s ability to use and understand basic English language skills:
UnderstandingTest takers should be able to understand simple information and everyday expressionsSpeakingTest takers should be able to introduce themselves, answer questions, and communicate in simple phrasesListeningTest takers should be able to listen to and take notes on a reading, and then answer questions about it
There are 3 question types:
- Repeat the sentence.
- Describe the image.
- Conversation: Listen and answer.
